The Crucifixion of Christ in chapel 10 with statues by Dionigi Bussola is probably the most spectacular representation of Sacro Monte di Varese. The scene is extremely theatrical. In the centre, some rogues are raising their crosses: Jesus is still alive and turns to his father, while, on the vault, a flurry of angels weep and despair. In the foreground, a group of executioners are nailing the two thieves to the crosses. All around, sculptures and frescoes depict people flocking to Mount Calvary. Some are curious and argue animatedly, others are in despair, others are disinterested and even amused.
To make this impressive scene even more effective, a special window was made in the top left-hand corner. This way, at certain times during Lent, the period when the Church celebrates the passion of Christ, light would enter the building and illuminate the figure of Jesus. The ray of sunlight would represent God's gaze on his son.
