Scenography and nature

The Capuchin friar Giovan Battista Aguggiari immediately engaged Giuseppe Bernasconi, the best Varese architect of the time. Bernasconi’s project for the Sacro Monte showed great skill and a particular attention y to the site and the surrounding nature. Long straight avenues connect the chapels with each other, with continuous scenic sights, opening up long perspectives on the landscape. As you can see walking from chapel 4 to chapel 5, the chapels themselves often become the scenic backdrops and focal points of the route.

Each stage of the Sacro Monte is staged in an elegant small temple with a central plan. This allows visitors to look at the statues and frescoes from many different points of view.
