Sacro Monte di Varallo

A Mountain That Narrates Stories

The Sacro Monte of Varallo is a place where art and nature are put at the service of storytelling.  And if it is true that children love stories, here they will find dozens of them; carved in stone and wood, painted on the walls and told by the faces and gestures of over 800 life-size statues.

The adventure can begin right on the funicular that conveniently connects the Sacro Monte with Varallo. Once on the mountain, the route is easily accessible on foot and is dotted with panoramic viewpoints, stairways and open spaces. The visit winds through squares, avenues and chapels illustrating episodes from the life of Jesus, in a dramatic and scenographic crescendo that engages even the youngest visitors. Each scene is a kind of miniature theatre; there are horses, soldiers, children, merchants, even exotic animals, all depicted with great realism. Walking here is like entering a three-dimensional illustrated book.

For families, it is a place that combines beauty and content, play and reflection. Visiting Varallo is a journey back in time to discover sacred history.
