The annunciation of the archangel to Mary
The chapel was completed in 1599 thanks to the financial support of the community of Alessandria. It marks the beginning of the tale of the mysteries of the New Testament contained in the canonical Gospels. As confirmed by the four Evangelists housed in the niches. Esther and Judith, heroines of the Old Testament, are depicted as pre-representations of Mary on the right wall and in the altarpiece. The scene, consisting of the Virgin Mary, the Archangel, the Holy Spirit, and above the cornice, God and five musician angels, was attributed to Giovanni Tabacchetti. But the group of statues was partly reworked in the mid-nineteenth century. The scenes depicting Esther imploring King Ahasuerus for the salvation of her people were attributed to the Lombardy-based painter Giovan Battista della Rovere, also known as "Il Fiammenghino", who also worked at the Sacro Monte of Varallo, Orta and Varese.
