Chapel 16

The climb to Calvary

The chapel was completed in 1892. The plaster statues were created by Leonardo Bistolfi, who symbolically reinterpreted the integration between painting and sculpture proposed by Gaudenzio Ferrari at the Sacro Monte of Varallo, in the early 16th century. Bistolfi represented the characters with the features of his family members: Joseph of Arimathea is his self-portrait, the figure, standing behind the Virgin Mary, has the face of his wife, the young man, sitting at the edge of the path, looks like his son. On the walls, the figures in relief gradually become flatter, merging with the frescoes by Giovanni Giani
