Varese as a model

We do not know exactly when the project for the Via Sacra of Ossuccio was made. It was probably inspired by the Sacro Monte di Varese, which in the 1840s was almost finished. Like in Varese, the 15 stages of the itinerary are dedicated to the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary. However, the funding was much lower than ini Varese and, therefore, the architecture of the chapels is less sumptuous, the dimensions are smaller and the scenes have less statues.

Sometimes, in Ossuccio, the setting of the mysteries is the faithful copy of Varese. This is the case of the chapel of the Annunciation. However, if you compare the two chapels, you can see that in Ossuccio many objects and furnishings are not three dimensional as in Varese, but only painted on the walls.
