On 7th July 1866 and 15th August 1867, the Kingdom of Italy passed two laws decreeing the suppression of religious orders and the confiscation of ecclesiastical property. This decision inevitably affected the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio. The land expropriated from the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso was put up for auction. The bid specified that the land around the chapels, up to a distance of one metre and fifty centimetres, remained the property of the Sanctuary, while the remaining part of Sacro Monte could be sold.
By selling the land surrounding the chapels to private individuals, it was possible to construct new buildings along the Via Sacra. For this reason, along the tour, you can see some small villas and private buildings. Even if the chapels have been preserved, the landscape has changed radically.
