The Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy: a UNESCO World Heritage Site
'The nine Sacri Monti of northern Italy consist of groups of chapels and other architectural features built between the late 15th and early 18th centuries and dedicated to various aspects of the Catholic faith. In addition to their spiritual and symbolic significance, these complexes offer a splendid example of the integration of architecture into the surrounding landscape of hills, forests and lakes. They also contain a remarkable artistic heritage in the form of sculptures and frescoes.' For these reasons, in 2003 UNESCO inscribed the site 'Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy' on the World Heritage List.
